Discipline at The Primary House will take the form of loving guidance. Harsh, physical or punitive punishment of any kind is not allowed. We will redirect behavior, discuss behavior with children and parents, reinforce positive behavior and use time-out if necessary. Children will never be in time-out for extended periods of time. The general rule is one minute for each year of age. Behavior that cannot be managed using the above, will result in the parent being called to pick the child up from the center. Though we will make every effort to work through behavioral problems, excessive violent or aggressive behavior will result in the family being asked to find alternate care. We must focus on the safety of all children in the center.
Virtually all children will bite at some point in early childhood. As a result, virtually all children are bitten when in a group of children. Experimenting with biting is natural and children bite for many different reasons. Generally, we can work through this and it never becomes a big problem. There are times, however, when we are forced to ask parents to find alternate care for a child who bites excessively.
The decision to potty train must be made by the parent and coordinated with the staff . All children who are in the process of potty training must be in pull ups. ‘Real’ big kid underwear cannot be used until accidents are almost gone. This is necessary for the health and safety of all children. All children who are potty training will be encouraged to go to the potty each hour. Potty training will be done in a positive, relaxed atmosphere. Under no circumstances will punishment be associated with lapses in training.
Children in diapers should have an adequate supply of diapers and wipes daily. All bottles must be made and supplied by parents. Each bottle should be labeled with the child’s name and date. Baby food is to be supplied by parents. Once children are eating table food, we supply all food. Children age one and above should have freshly laundered, labeled bedding each Monday. The bedding should be taken home and laundered on Fridays. In addition, all children should have a complete change of clothing in their baskets.
Each child has a basket in his or her classroom. All of your child’s belongings should be kept in his basket. Please label blankets, jackets and all personal belongings before bringing them to the center.
